Countries and time zones

Where Odesa developers work in Eastern Europe

Odesa engineers in Eastern Europe live in four countries: Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine. Poland, Romania and Bulgaria are EU member states; Ukraine is not. Wherever your engineer lives, the contract is the same: you sign with Odesa.co in the US, and the engineer works your US business hours.

Poland

Poland runs on Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer), six hours ahead of US Eastern. A 9:00 to 17:00 Eastern working day is 15:00 to 23:00 in Warsaw, the earliest finish of the four countries. As an EU member, Poland works under GDPR, which helps when your security review asks where the work and the data sit.

Romania

Romania runs on Eastern European Time (UTC+2, UTC+3 in summer), seven hours ahead of US Eastern, so a 9:00 to 17:00 Eastern day is 16:00 to 24:00 in Bucharest. Romania is also in the EU, and it shares a time zone with Bulgaria and Ukraine, so engineers across those three countries keep the same local hours on one team.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria is on the same Eastern European Time as Romania, seven hours ahead of US Eastern: 9:00 to 17:00 Eastern is 16:00 to 24:00 in Sofia. Bulgaria is an EU member, which keeps contracting and data questions straightforward for teams that already work with EU vendors.

Ukraine

Ukraine is also on Eastern European Time, seven hours ahead of US Eastern, so 9:00 to 17:00 Eastern is 16:00 to 24:00 in Kyiv. Ukraine is outside the EU, but nothing changes for you: your agreement is with Odesa.co, and you can ask about each engineer’s continuity setup in the interview. Our guide on how to hire Ukrainian developers covers talent, rates and continuity in detail.

How full overlap with US business hours works

Odesa engineers in Eastern Europe work your US business hours. That is how they work with every client: standups, code reviews and quick questions happen in your day, and the engineer finishes when your team does. The example below is for a team on US Eastern time.

CityLocal working hoursUS Eastern equivalent
Warsaw, Poland15:00 to 23:009:00 to 17:00 Eastern
Bucharest, Romania16:00 to 24:009:00 to 17:00 Eastern
Sofia, Bulgaria16:00 to 24:009:00 to 17:00 Eastern
Kyiv, Ukraine16:00 to 24:009:00 to 17:00 Eastern

The US and Europe change clocks on different dates, so for about three weeks a year (late March and late October) local hours move one hour earlier, for example 15:00 to 23:00 in Kyiv. Your hours stay the same. Teams on Central, Mountain or Pacific time get the same full overlap: the engineer works your business day, and the hours are written into your quote.

How hiring works

How hiring works, from first call to first day.

Ask for sample profiles before the first call, so you can judge the network before you sign anything. Val Narodetsky, our founder, handles matching personally, and Zhanna Agranova, our COO, runs talent operations.

  1. Sign the MSA

One master services agreement with Odesa.co, a US company. It sets confidentiality, code ownership, rates and notice terms for every engineer you add.

  2. Kickoff meeting

Val meets your team to pin down the stack, seniority, responsibilities, budget and the US hours the engineer will keep.

  3. Odesa sources talent

Zhanna runs the search in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine, checking experience and communication against your brief before anyone reaches you.

  4. Review profiles

You get a hand-picked shortlist with experience, availability and evaluation notes. Our company-reported average is 4.2 days from contract to first interview.

  5. You interview

Run your own technical interview, live coding session or code review. You decide who joins; we coordinate scheduling and feedback.

  6. Onboarding

The engineer joins your tools, standups and sprints on your hours. The first two weeks are a trial; after that the engagement runs month to month.

Why Eastern Europe

Why US teams hire developers in Eastern Europe

Senior engineering depth

Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine have long-established software industries. Val matches each role personally, so you see engineers picked for your stack and seniority, not a keyword search.

Your business hours, in full

Odesa engineers in Eastern Europe work full overlap with US business hours. Standups, pairing, code reviews and quick questions happen in your day, not in a handoff note the next morning.

English and communication, checked

We assess spoken and written communication against your brief before you see a profile. Then you judge it yourself in the interview, with your own team in the room.

A two-week trial, then month to month

Every staff augmentation start begins with a two-week trial in your real workflow. After that, add engineers or scale down as the roadmap changes, under notice terms set in your agreement.

Someone owns the fit after day one

Val and Zhanna stay involved after the start: check-ins on how the engagement is going, replacement requests and growing the team when the roadmap gets bigger.

A US contract and your IP in writing

You sign with Odesa.co in Lighthouse Point, Florida, not a foreign vendor. Confidentiality, ownership of code and deliverables, the rate and notice terms are written down before work begins.

Questions, answered

Hiring in Eastern Europe: FAQ

How much does it cost to hire a developer in Eastern Europe?

Through Odesa, staff augmentation starts at $45/hr, month to month, with a two-week trial. The final rate depends on seniority, stack and availability, and your quote confirms the rate, schedule and included support before work begins. If you want a permanent employee instead, tech recruitment is a flat $7,999 per hire, due when the candidate accepts, with a 90-day replacement guarantee. See pricing for details.

What is the time difference between Eastern Europe and the US?

Poland is 6 hours ahead of US Eastern time, and Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine are 7 hours ahead. Add 3 hours for US Pacific. For about three weeks a year the gap is one hour smaller, because the US and Europe change clocks on different dates. Odesa engineers work full US business hours either way: 9:00 to 17:00 Eastern is 16:00 to 24:00 in Kyiv, Bucharest or Sofia and 15:00 to 23:00 in Warsaw.

Which countries does Odesa hire from?

In Eastern Europe and the EU, Odesa engineers work from Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine. In Latin America, they work from Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Bolivia. In every country the engineer is contracted through Odesa.co, a US company, and works full overlap with US business hours.

Can I still hire Ukrainian developers?

Yes. Ukraine is one of the four Eastern European countries in Odesa’s network, and the contract works the same way as anywhere else. Ask about each engineer’s continuity setup, such as backup power and internet, in the interview. The two-week trial and month-to-month terms let you change course if it does not work, and recruitment hires carry a 90-day replacement guarantee. Read more on how to hire Ukrainian developers.

Do I need a local entity or an EOR to hire in Eastern Europe?

Not for staff augmentation. You sign one agreement with Odesa.co in the US, and the engineer is contracted through Odesa, so you need no entity, employer of record or local payroll in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria or Ukraine. For a direct hire through recruitment, the engineer joins your payroll, and you choose how to employ them, for example through an employer of record.

Should I hire Eastern European or Latin American developers?

Through Odesa, both work full US business hours, start from $45/hr and use the same contract and hiring process. Engineers in Eastern Europe work your hours in their afternoon and evening; engineers in Latin America live in or near US time zones. Choose on the candidates for your stack. We can show profiles from both regions, and our guide compares Eastern European vs Latin American developers in detail.
